Students showcase exceptional research and critical thinking at inaugural annual debate cup
SGTU hosts event, Amani and Anirudh’s team emerges as best
Gurugram: The School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts (SHSL), in collaboration with the students group ‘Tuskers’, successfully organised the first SGTU Annual Debate Cup 2026 on August 6 at SGT university, campus . The competition marked the beginning of a significant annual academic initiative aimed at promoting academic excellence, critical thinking and meaningful dialogue among students.
Students from various schools of the university participated in the debate and presented compelling arguments on contemporary issues. The key motions for the competition were: “This House believes that Artificial Intelligence will create more jobs than it will eliminate” and “This House believes that economic growth should never come at the cost of environmental sustainability.” The participants demonstrated impressive research skills, logical reasoning, oratory abilities and rebuttal techniques.
The event was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Shammi Nagpal, Dean, School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts and School of Emerging Media, Communication and Film Studies (SMCF). She highlighted the vital role of debates in developing analytical thinking, logical discourse and effective communication skills among students.
The Valedictory Session was graced by Prof. (Dr.) Atul Kumar Nasa, Pro Vice-Chancellor, SGT University. Congratulating the participants, he emphasised the importance of critical thinking, informed dialogue and respectful debate in higher education.
The SGTU Annual debating cup rolling trophy was awarded to the best Team comprising Amani and Anirudh from the Faculty of Indian Medical System. The best speaker awards were presented to Parth from the School of Commerce and Management and Anirudh from the Faculty of Indian Medical System. The Runner-up Speaker Awards were conferred upon Daksh and Shaheen from the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts.
The Best Rebuttal Question Award was presented to Anushruti from the School of Emerging Media, Communication and Film Studies, while the Best Rebuttal Answer Award was presented to Anirudh from the Faculty of Indian Medical System.
The enthusiastic participation of students, along with the valuable support of the judges, faculty members, organisers and volunteers, contributed significantly to the success of the event. The inaugural edition laid a strong foundation for the SGTU Annual Debate Cup to evolve into a distinguished annual tradition that nurtures research, critical thinking, effective communication and constructive dialogue among students.
